Images and Words Hypnotherapy

...experience the freedom you deserve...

Lyn Turner R.M.N. ASHPD (Distinction)

Treating people’s problems via a 'healing state of trance' is amongst the oldest phenomena known to humankind. It is found in almost every culture in the world in some form or another.

The powerful effects of hypnosis have been widely recognised for thousands of years to enhance learning and performance, to heal emotional scars and to develop positive ways of thinking and behaving.

Hypnosis is a relaxed and naturally occurring state that we all enter several times each day, it is a state of mind enhanced by physical and mental relaxation during which our subconscious mind is able to communicate with our conscious mind.

So What Is It?

Hypnotherapy has become widely accepted as an excellent method for accessing and realeasing our inner potential, either by ones self, (Self-hypnosis), or guided by a professional hypnotherapist; the resulting state of mind can facilitate beneficial changes in almost every aspect of life.

A professional hypnotherapist will use  a variety of techniques during a session including, visualisation that enlists the help of your own imagination, metaphor and story telling, and the use of direct suggestion to elicit beneficial changes for you.

Analytical techniques may be employed to uncover problems that may have had their origins in the past, (The there and then), or to concentrate on the manifestation of these problems that you may have today, (The here and now).

Whichever of these techniques employed by the hypnotherapist the most important condition for a successful hypnotherapy session is that you must feel relaxed, comfortable and at ease with your therapist.

Allaying Your Fears...

You may be wondering if hypnotherapy is right for you, or have worries about what happens during a session, or any one of the more common concerns? I wish to offer some reassurance but if any concerns remain after reading this, and you are interested in having hypnotherapy, then please feel free to contact me for an informal chat or to book a free assessment session.

The Hypnotherapy Session...

The hypnotic trance state is very similar to day dreaming or being very focussed on a good book, and it is a naturally occurring state that you may be surprised to know that we all enter into several times each day.

You will be able to think normally and will hear everything that is said to you. I will guide you into a deeply relaxed state during which you subconscious mind is accessible or receptive to suggestion.

Your mind will remain alert and focussed but your body experiences deep and pleasurable relaxation.

Common Concerns...

Can I be made to act or do anything I would not want to do?

Absolutely not, your conscious mind is always alert and on guard and it will not allow any suggestions that you would not readily agree to in your normal state or that are contradictory to your ethical or moral beliefs: this is called the 'Critical Awareness Factor'

Can I lose control or get 'stuck' in hypnosis?

Absolutely not, it is impossible to get stuck in hynosis and all you ever have to do at any stage you choose is open you eyes, because you are in control at all times and I am just a guide in the process that you control.

Will I be unconscious during hypnosis?

Absolutely not, in fact many people question whether they have been hypnotised at all after their first experience as they stay alert and in control. The first part of any initial session I will spend talking to you about any concerns you may have because it is essential that you feel confident as well as comfortable.

Can I be hynotised?

Almost anybody can be hypnotised if they wish to be but there are a few exceptions when hynotherapy is advised against; this will be explored as part of your initial assessment.

Contraindications...

Here are the main conditions under which I would not consider offering hypnotherapy treatment:

  • If you are under the influence of illicit drugs or alcohol
  • If you suffer from epilepsy
  • If you have a history of violence towards yourself or others
  • If you have suffered a bereavement in the last 6 months
  • If you are severely depressed*

*There may be certain circumstances where I would require your permission to clear hypnotherapy with your GP
